Cheap Flights – Get the Most from Your Airfare Dollar

When you’re looking for cheap flights, there are many factors you should consider. Air travel can be rather expensive, so the rules of cheap living really apply here. Below, I’ll share with you some tips to keep your fares as low as possible.

1. Book early – Normally, the earlier you reserve your flight, the better. The reason for this is that the airlines usually have a certain number of seats designated for particular fare codes. Once the lower priced seats are sold for a particular flight, you can’t get that fare.

2. Check prices daily – If you are looking for a flight several months from now, you should check prices daily until you actually make the reservation. Airline prices will often change on a daily basis. So, to get really cheap flights, you should check often.

3. Avoid holidays – If possible, don’t fly close to holidays, because fares are normally higher due to demand.

4. Fly at night – Often, the airlines will offer lower fares at night, because many people don’t want to leave or arrive during late night hours.

5. Flexibility – This is a very important aspect of getting cheap flights. If you check various dates, especially the days during the middle of the week, you’ll have a better chance of getting lower fares. Also, sometimes you can get a better deal if you are willing to travel to a nearby airport. For example, I can often get fares that are one to two hundred dollars cheaper by flying from Austin rather than San Antonio. Of course, it’s less convenient to do that. You have to make the decision as to whether it is worth the trouble.

6. Check online – There are several sites that will compare fares from many other sources. One of the best is Kayak.com. If you are booking pretty far in advance, I recommend you use Kayak daily to compare hundreds of fares at one time. If you are closer to your travel dates, I recommend you use Priceline.com, because you can make a bid to try to get the lowest fare possible.

I hope you find these tips useful in your attempt to find cheap flights. If you have some other good tips, feel free to leave a comment below. Live cheap and prosper.

  1. Kayak and Priceline are great resources to find cheap air, but it’s important to remember that these third-party sites do not search some low-cost airlines, like Southwest. In order to find their deals you must go directly to their website.

  2. Hey! Nice job here! I’ll be dropping by from time to time :)
